I worked for many years in furniture retail sales and I have been asked the same question so many times, I thought I would write a little blog post about it.  The common question I receive from customers is "what is the best type of fabric that my cat won't destroy for my sofa?".

I can answer this question truthfully because personally, I myself have been a cat owner of several different cats over the last 30 years.  The short answer is that there really is no type of fabric that is scratch proof.  Be it leather, vinyl, microsuede, polyester, rayon, it doesn't matter. Cats will destroy it.

I tell my customers that they simply cannot worry about their cats destroying their furniture.  If you're worried about your pets destroying your furniture, then you can either clip their nails every few weeks or train them not to go on the furniture.  Easier said than done.

Okay, so really, there has to be a sofa that can hold up against cat claws.  The simple answer is a wooden futon frame, futon mattress and cover.  Most cats like to scratch the arms of sofas.  However, a futon frame is wood which cats cannot scratch.  However, cats can still scratch the futon mattress and cover.  Most cats like to go underneath the futon and try to scratch the bottom of the mattress.

Innerspring

First we start with innerspring mattresses. Innerspring coil mattresses are good for love making if you like a little bounce in your thrust. The bounce of the springs will keep the motion going but will lessen the impact. Also if you invest in an innerspring mattress, make sure it contains a thick and strong foam encasement perimeter. This feature will give extra support along the edge of the mattress so it doesn’t cave in. Not all love making is done in the middle of the bed, some couples use the edge. It is especially important that the mattress has extra foam pad layering over the thick 10″ or greater for the size of the coils. Shopping for sofa beds online can be quite a hard task especially if you are only going by the picture and can't try it out in person.  However, price says everything. 90% of the time you see that price has everything to do with quality.  If you can buy a sofa bed for less than $300, you can't expect much from comfort.  The average retail price of a sofa bed of decent quality, it  will usually range from $400-$800 range.

The number one lesson you should know is that looks can be deceiving, and you can't judge a book by it's cover.  If you have read about any of my previous articles concerning my issues with the metal futon frame, I now have come an advocate of the metal futon frame if you are considering buying one of these sofa bed junkers.  A metal futon frame will always be better than any of these cheap convertible sofa beds.

Why are these cheap sofa beds so bad?

•  They contain  very low density of cheap Chinese foam.  A sofa bed or also commonly referred to as "click clacks", "modern futons", "couch beds" etc.., will contain some layering of high density foam padding above the coil springs or mesh webbing seat deck.  In cheap sofa beds, this foam will lose its density very fast and within no time you will feel the support coils or webbing sticking up in you.
• The sofa legs are either plastic, or hollow metal which can easily break
• Most of these sofa beds are not standard size mattress lengths, and many of them are shorter than 70" long.  Twin size bed mattresses are at least 75" long.
• Very uncomfortable for sitting long periods of time.  Because of the dimensions of these sofa beds, the height and seating depth can be quite off which makes it quite uncomfortable for sitting.
• Not designed to withstand weights of over 150lbs.  This doesn't mean the sofa will break, it means that it will be very hard and uncomfortable for the average weight adult to sit on.. 
• There is no solid wood frame.  The frame of these sofa beds are usually mad with particle board wood or cheap metal.  

Bottom line, these sofa beds really do not hold up well and should be tossed to the garbage within less than a year.

In contrast, if you are looking for a decent quality sofa bed that's not too expensive under $600, you should consider a sofa bed from either "Istikbal" or "Lifestyle Solutions".  These sofa beds use solid woods and metals for their frames as well as a much better quality density of foam in their cushions.  The legs of the sofa are much better made and tend to be very durable if not solid.

The first question you probably would like to ask us is, "if you're so against the metal futon frame, why do you even bother selling it on your website?".  The simple answer to this is that we like to cater to all consumer budgets, BUT, we think it's fair to give fair warning if you have higher expectations with such a purchase.

The metal futon frame is what has given the futon industry a bad rep, and in addition, it has also tarnished the name "futon" by associating it with poor college students.  If you still think that you'll be okay with such a purchase, first ask yourself the following questions:

• How much do I weigh? if for two people, How much do we weigh together?
• Will I be opening and closing the futon frame often?
• Will I be sleeping alone, or do I plan on being "active" with a significant other?
• If I will be frequently using this futon, do I plan I using it more for six months?

Do you see where I'm getting at with these questions?  Here are the following reasons why you should avoid the metal futon frame:

• The slats where the mattress rests are either thin metal wire mesh or round hollow tubular slats.  Both of these platform slat formations stick up into to the mattress over time and ruin it. Eventually you will start to feel the cheap metal support slats under the mattress
• The frame squeaks quite a bit and will not hold up to any sort of mildly rough activity if you catch my drift. 
• The cheap metal frame is 95% hollow and not solid. This means the metal can easily bend and snap off the welding. And it usually does
• The conversion roller always breaks
• If you must buy a metal frame because that's the only thing you can afford, NEVER settle for the mattress that comes with the frame. They are extremely heavy and don't even contain cotton but rather shredded yarn or recycled textile fibers. Very hard, and uncomfortable. (This does not apply apply to Urban Futons standard mattress that comes with the futon package, but you should still upgrade)

Save yourself the future headache if you can afford to avoid the metal frame and think about a better quality alternative.
